Frequently asked questions

What organisers and clubs ask us most about costs, chips, equipment and timing software.

Prices and costs

Is there an annual fee for the equipment or the software?

No. With Cronomach you have no annual costs at all: no maintenance, no memberships, no subscriptions and no payments for updates. You pay for the equipment once and it's yours.

No annual costs →
How much does timing equipment cost?

It depends on the event. As a guide: PHOTOCELL (no chip) 350 €, BLUE 1 and CRONOPISTOLA 1.600 €, ACTSLEEP2.45 with batteries 1.900 €, ATL98 with 200 chips 2.500 € and SI91 3.500 € with 4 antennas or 4.500 € with 8 antennas. The CRONO_META finish clock, from 500 €.

How much does each chip cost?

UHF passive chips cost from 0,10 € each. The SI91 already includes 250 chips (4-antenna version) or 400 chips (8-antenna version), and the ATL98 is sold with 200 chips.

Is it worth buying the equipment instead of hiring a timing service?

If you organise or time several events a year, usually yes: you pay for the equipment once and each event only costs you the chips. We explain it with a calculator on the blog.

Chips

Do I have to buy the chips from you?

You don't have to. We give you the specifications of the chips to use for each discipline so you can buy them from whichever supplier you prefer, and you encode them with the included encoding software.

What's the difference between an active and a passive chip?

The UHF passive chip has no battery: it's very cheap and the reader detects more than 1,000 chips at once, ideal for mass-participation events. The active chip has a battery: it's reusable, water-resistant, reads at 200 km/h and the finish is just a cable on the ground, with no obstacles.

Guide: which chip to use for each sport →
Which chip do I use for each sport?

For running races and amateur cycling, a passive chip on the bib or number plate. For triathlon, a chip on the ankle with a neoprene ankle strap. For open-water swimming, an active chip, which reads even underwater. For motorsport, an active transponder, which reads at 200 km/h.

See the full guide →
Can the chips be reused?

Yes. There are very cheap disposable chips, such as Dorsalchip or Pegachip, and reusable chips such as Chippie, Trichip, Tarjetachip and the active chips. With the USB Encoder you can check and reprogram your chips.

Could it mistakenly read chips from another race?

No. The system recognises the chips programmed for the current competition and discards those from past events.

Equipment

What equipment do I need for a popular race?

For running races with lots of participants we recommend a UHF passive reader with ground or overhead antennas: the SI91 or the ATL98. For trail and checkpoints in remote locations, the BLUE 1 handheld reader or the CRONOPISTOLA.

How to prepare a popular race →
How many participants can it read at once?

UHF passive readers with anti-collision detect more than 1,000 chips at the same instant, even when more than 200 participants are over the antennas at the start and finish. The ACTSLEEP2.45 active system is designed for events of up to 300 participants.

Is the system approved?

Yes. The system and software are approved by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) in accordance with IAAF rules.

Can you do timing without chips?

Yes, with the PHOTOCELL: a photocell with a USB control unit that detects each participant passing. It's ideal for time trials, enduro and downhill, and the bib can be assigned after they pass.

Downhill Offer →
Can you do timing in water?

Yes. The ACTSLEEP2.45 active system reads the chip even underwater and lets you place the finish line in the middle of the water. The chip is fastened to the ankle or wrist.

Software and results

What software is included?

All the equipment comes with its own software. For results there's CRONOCLAS: it imports entries from Excel or CSV, calculates categories, clubs and podiums, and produces reports in PDF or Excel. There are also dedicated programs for slalom, rallies, time-trial starts, podiums and more.

See all software →
Can I publish the results online live?

Yes. CRONOCLAS publishes the results via FTP and the web viewer refreshes every 3 seconds, with tabs by category. You can also show them on screens at the finish.

Online times guide →
Do I need internet to do the timing?

No. Reads are saved instantly on the computer and the results are calculated there. You only need internet if you want to publish the results online.

Use and support

Is it hard to learn to use?

No. You have step-by-step training videos for the SI91 and CRONOCLAS, guides on the blog, and you can call us or message us on WhatsApp if you get stuck.

See the tutorials →
Can I time an event on my own?

Yes. All the equipment allows standalone timing, and the SI91 offers automatic timing at the push of a button and control of the equipment from a phone.
